Be prepared for the Euros 2024 with Temporary Events Notices

20th May 2024

By Eleanor Jordan, Solicitor.

With only one month left until kick-off, there is no time like the present to lodge Temporary Event Notices (TENs) for the Euros 2024.

Why should you apply for a TEN?

TENs can be used for a variety of reasons to boost your trading on match days, from extending your hours, increasing your capacity to disapplying licence conditions.

When should you apply for a TEN?

It’s important to remember that standard TEN applications must be submitted to the Council at least 10 working days before the date of a match. Otherwise, a ‘late’ TEN can be applied for 5 clear working days before the match but no appeal process will be available if any objections are received.

How many TENs can you apply for in one calendar year?

A premises can apply for up to 15 TENs in one calendar year, lasting up to a total of 20 days.

What happens if England and/or Scotland reach at least the semi-final?

The Licensing Act 2003 (UEFA European Football Championship Licensing Hours) Order 2024 sets out that if England and/or Scotland reach the semi-final and/or finals of the EUROs, premises that are authorised to sell alcohol until at least 23:00, can continue to sell alcohol on the premises and provide late night refreshment on the premises until 01:00 after the game.

It is important to note that this relaxation does not apply to off-sales of alcohol, regulated entertainment, nor premises only permitted to sell alcohol until earlier than 23:00. This final point is particularly significant for the final, which takes place on Sunday 14 July, as often premises are only permitted to serve alcohol to earlier than 23:00 on a Sunday.

If your licence will not benefit from this relaxation, but you wish to extend your licensable activities, a TEN will be required and our Licensing team can assist you with this. Please contact us on 0161 832 3434.
